Josh starts dating a seventeen-year-old girl named Bobbie Fitzgerald who seems to have all the right qualities -- attractive, smart, sweet, level-headed, responsible.  But he soon discovers she also has a child -- a two-year-old son named Kevin.  Josh keeps the fact that Bobbie has a son a secret from his parents -- while he struggles with whether or not he can deal with the notion himself.  Josh gets the wrong idea when he shows up with a gift for Kevin and sees Alan (Bobbie's ex-boyfriend and Kevin's father) playing with Kevin.  Bobbie tries to clear the air by reassuring Josh that she wants Alan to be a part of Kevin's life but that there are no romantic feelings between them anymore.  Bobbie explains that her first priority is to her son -- and leaves the rest up to Josh.  When Claire finds a toy elephant (which Josh had intended for Kevin) among his things, she asks who it's for.  Josh is evasive, saying it's a surprise.  Hattie warns Josh that his parents are starting to get suspicious.  Hattie explains that she recognized Bobbie from the day care center (where Hattie volunteers).  Hattie knew that Bobbie had a son, but was waiting for Josh to tell her himself.  When Bobbie has to cancel her plans to join the Greenes on a weekend trip to Boulder because Kevin has a cold, the truth comes out.  Russell and Claire express their concerns for Josh getting involved with a single mother.  Bobbie may have to live with the consequences of her actions, but Josh shouldn't have to.  But Josh says he cares about Bobbie and wants to be with her -- and Kevin.

Also, during this episode, Dinah meets an unusual girl named Margot Notewirthy.  Margot is not your average teenager.  Margot drinks only loose green tea, rides a three wheeled bicycle and scrawls Dorothy Parker quotations on her notebook.  Russell and Claire are taken off guard by this precocious girl who claims she was born a hundred years too late and insists on calling them by their first names.  But once they look beyond the eccentricities, they (and Dinah) learn to appreciate Margot and realize friendship comes in many forms.
