Josh is attacked by some street kids while on his way home from the grocery store.  Fifteen-year-old runaway, Dylan Grady, witnesses the incident and scares off Josh's attackers who steal Josh's motorcycle.  Dylan notifies the Greenes as Josh is taken to the hospital and treated for injuries.  Dylan leads the Greenes to believe that he lives in a wealthy neighborhood but they eventually discover that Dylan is in fact homeless.  Josh is traumatized by the attack and becomes afraid to leave the house.  Russell and Claire disagree over how to deal with Josh's fear.  Claire urges Russell to back off and give Josh the time he needs.  The debate over what to do with Josh creates tension between Hattie and Claire.  So much so that Hattie considers going back to Chicory Creek to prevent causing unnecessary strain on their marriage.  Dylan weaves a tall tale about how his mother took off with a biker and he wound up in an abusive foster care setting.  When Dylan disappears with a figurine Hattie's husband had given her, Russell goes looking for him.  Russell finds Dylan scrounging for food behind a supermarket and gives chase until he finds him and his little sister, Gretchen.  Dylan explains the real reason he left home began when his father (an off duty cop) went into a convenience store (with Dylan's older brother, Danny) during a robbery.  Shots were fired and Danny was killed in the crossfire.  Russell takes Dylan to the police department where Detective Pena confirms Dylan's story.  Detective Pena says that Dylan's father (Joseph Grady) was in bad shape after the death of his son.  But their running away shook him up and he's cleaned up his act.  They inform Dylan that his dad's on his way.  But Dylan is unwilling to forgive his father, who neglected them after his brother's death.  While Russell goes to get sandwiches, Dylan steals the gun out of the detective's desk drawer and takes off with Gretchen.  Russell returns home to fill Claire in on what's happened.  Josh knows about an old railroad siding where Dylan likes to hang out.  LT acts reluctant to go along as a way of coaxing Josh out of the house.  Together, Russell, LT and Josh go to the location.  Russell has LT and Josh call the police while he confronts Dylan.  As Dylan aims a gun at him, Russell convinces Dylan to give his father a second chance.  Reunited with his children, Joseph Grady apologizes for the past and promises to do his best to make it up to them.  Dylan returns Hattie's figurine -- but she asks him to keep it.  It got her through a rough patch and she hopes it will do the same for their family.  All's well that ends well as Hattie changes her mind and decides to stay on with the family and Josh's motorcycle is recovered.
